Sophomore Sun

Second Sun
The Lost Weekend
Ultra Records
MP3
Release date: 08 31 10

During the twilight of Watts Distribution, their website had sound samples of the current week’s music, which is how I first heard Second Sun’s ‘The Spell’. We all loved those early 12”s and the debut CD was on rotation for a long time around here. Hell, my girlfriend and I even saw them twice. They were great. So good in fact, I feared they would shed the weight of those early records and get all L.A.-coked out and deliver this, their second album. But it’s not like that. Not exactly, anyway. Second Sun admit they wanted to “incorporate more house-based dance beats into [their] sound” but the result is the band forgoing much of the progressive vibe of their earlier work to the more accessible house style presented here. This isn’t exactly news. If you haven’t been paying attention, the band’s been busy with this ‘new’ style for a few years now. All the band’s recent singles are here: the Ibiza-meets-Tenaglia ‘Golden’, ‘Doing It Well’, ‘We Own The Night’ and the Tears For Fears-channeling ‘Fire & Water’ (for even more egregious Tears For Fears channeling, check ‘Savior’). Also, their ‘07 collabo with Cedric Gervais is given a facelift here in the form of ‘More Pills’. There are moments on this album where instrumentalist Adam Cavaluzi wants to rip and take a more subjective journey but there is a blueprint that must be followed. Many of the sounds in the vocal tracks are gonna be familiar from any house party you went to in the last 18 months. It’s a safe bet for this sophomore attempt, which usually wastes EDM acts, but Second Sun maintain and will probably find a shitload of new fans for it. A debauched night out with big sunglasses, hard bodies and VIP bottle service. 6/10

Back to the Future

Any of you old-schoolers out there remember Young American Primitive? If you were dancing to Kimball Collins and DJ Icee (before the cease and desist), you should. His debut CD is highly coveted and has sold for $50 and up for years. yaplabrecordings on eBay is offering original sealed copies of this CD starting at $15 and I think every one has sold so far. It might be one of the best West Coast albums ever so don’t sleep! 1993 would be pissed.

A - Positive

Full disclosure: I think the Anjuna release schedule is a little too busy for it’s own good. Releasing a track per week cheapens the music in the long run. As leaders in the scene, the Anjuna gang should take the ball and slow it down a bit. That said, their comps are unmatched: they take all the best bits and present them to you in one flawless mix. And let’s face it, the tracks are beautifully made. So now, picture yourself having just won the genetic lottery while I check these two out:

Anjunabeats Volume 8
mixed by Above & Beyond
Ultra Records [US]
2xCD / MP3
Release date: 07 19 10

Anjunabeats Worldwide 02
mixed by Super 8 & Tab and Mat Zo
Anjunabeats [UK]
2xCD / MP3
Release date: 05 10 10

The Anjunabeats sound is the de facto music for positive vibes, once again proven by the selectors that grace these two releases. "Volume 8" is Above & Beyond's annual installment in the series and does it's best to highlight all the recent action on the label. Once upon a time trance music functioned as a hazy respite into the darkness but this comp is like a lucid trip into an idealistic Utopian future. These tracks gleam with that sonic whitewash prevalent in damn near every Anjuna track out. The music here just makes me feel better. There are newcomers like Arty and Bart Claessen alias Who.Is (click Bart’s link for some killer 8-bit action) who add bright new shades to the Anjunabeats palette along with some remixes of old faves. (While nothing will beat the original 'Larry Mountains 54', Dan Stone flips the script on 'Alt+F4' and brings the background to the front in a fantastic reworking). A sweet and juicy comp that's not to be missed. Intense! 8/10

"Worldwide 02" proves strength in variation. Super 8 & Tab kick off Disc One, the slicker of the two. Kyau & Albert's remix of Bent's 'As You Fall' never gets old and Jer Martin's 'Ten Minutes to Midnight' is gorgeous. It's a humid night time ride through city lights with the top down. This is contrasted by Mat Zo's deeper and buzzier Disc Two which highlights some of his new work and closes with his remix of the truly inspired 'Call of Loneliness' by Reeves (an alias of Andy Duguid). I appreciate the use of Andy along with Ivan Ross look-alike Richard Durand on Disc Two as it shows Anjuna is not intent on only profiling it's roster (though I never see anyone from the Spinnin Records family on their comps). The placement of Mat Zo's mix on Disc Two makes the album work better as a whole because it posits that super-shiny trance doesn't have to be the inevitable outcome to every mix. 8/10

Enjoy the Silence

Is this that "cruel summer" Bananarama were singing about in Karate Kid? Between the record heat and boring club nights, the only rescue of late has been my CD player. Fortunately, the promo fairy and the cutthroat vendors on Amazon have brought me some new music that I’ve now had a chance to review.

Markus Schulz
Do You Dream
Ultra Records [US]
CD / MP3
06 15 10

This record sounds like a strategically planned idea to get Markus to the #1 slot in the DJ Mag polls. There was an earnest quality to his tracks that still appears in glimpses on this new record, but it's undoing is summed up in the title track, boringly titled after one of the strongest trance singles of 2009. "Do You Dream?", Markus Schulz' third full-length, is plagued by unnecessary vocals. On 12", the title track was fierce but the vocalizing on this slightly re-tooled album version removes that urgent quality. There are vocal tracks that work well like 'Not The Same', the cover of Cass & Slide’s 'Perception' and 'Goodbye' with Max Graham, but the 4 track vocal mid-section after the title track should have been cut. The Khan entries are superfluous and sound like an attempt to duplicate earlier hits like 'Cause You Know' and 'Without You Near'. As a result of all these cameos, Markus' deep and introspective production (like last year’s incredible Dakota album) suffers by not being in the foreground. Smashing instrumentals like 'Rain' and '65.4 Hz' don't deserve to be radio-length and some of the written-for-the-music vocal cuts would be better served as 6 minute instrumentals instead of pop. Sadly, it sums up the direction of Armin van Buuren and the Armada camp in the last three years. We don't wanna go back to Coldharbour but we miss the music. 6/10

PS - Coming up tomorrow, a review of the 2 latest Anjunabeats comps.

#DEMF The last dance

It's funny but at Demf everyone's experience is different. The music is so diverse that sometimes you might see a totally different lineup then your friends but the experience is just as amazing. A must see for me was Carl Craig's highly praised Moritz Von Oswald Trio. This free form ambient jazz synth jam that featured Basic Channel founder and even Carl Craig himself really challenged the audience with an otherworldly vibe. Afterwards my favorite remixer as of late, DJ Koze threw down an amazing set of deep twisted mind blowing house tunes and even with the rain, had us all jumpin in the Red Bull tent. Jennifer Xerri was layering the mixes for what seemed like days with her flawless mixing. It was at about that point that my wife's back was giving out and food and rest were needed and as much as we wanted to see Model 500 and Chris Leibing we knew it would have to wait till next year. Now you might think the story would be over but after a recharge we headed up to the Majestic for a free after party. Batter up, Matthew Dear with bass heavy slow synchopated creeping style he had us groovin with a small comfy crowd. Then when Michael Mayer showed up Matt and Seth Troxler improvised for a spell. Mr. Mayer really brought some magic with him weaving a technoy gossamer with some crazy electro and old school house jams thrown in for good measure. Then Simian Mobile Disco rounded the rest of night with high energy electro jams following us all the way home. Overall Detroit was another amazing experience, rich in culture and music, and a city that embraces the foundation of techno music, the past, present and future.

#DEMF Two for too

Day Two at Demf went deep. We had a late start Sunday but made our way the main stage and were mezmorized with the enigmatic Larry Heard. After his revival and insanely good Mr. White releases I only wish he could have played the main stage even longer. DJ Sneak was surprise favorite for me, his deep house vibe was contagious and had fists flying. The Made In Detroit stage was on. Anthony (Shake) Shakir and then Rolando kept us in motion non-stop with Detroit techno energy at its absolute finest! Of course there was a big disappointment over Villalobos not being able to play the festival but getting to see Inner City take the stage was a classic moment as they performed many of there hits that inspired a generation of house and techno heads. That night we headed to the Metroplex 25 year party only to be held outside the door for an hour and a half and just as we were about to call it quits they started letting everybody in. Downstairs Kevin Saunderson was pounding us into sweaty submission and making bodies dance to and fro with his intense blend of Detroit techno. Upstairs the cold heart of Berlin resonated in Ben Klock's deep, dark, piercing take on the sister city's sound . But alas the old legs could stand no more at point and as much as the heart was in it, we had to head back for a disco nights sleep.

#demf last night

So last night was the hotness. We were jammin to Jamie Jones, twisting to Theo Parish then Josh Wink had the hands in the air. The crowds were insane and it was only day one. Around 10:45p all went silent and there was a massive swarm to the main stage where Plastikman brought deep dark dripping acid live. The masses were seriously entranced as 1000's felt the dark bass lines and twisted acid that only Detroit has to give. Helicopter was the last track and whether you could see it, hear it or just feel the track it made for a insane ending to day 1 of the festival.

#Walking and Running

Last night was insane. Speedy J had the main room at St. Andrews jumping and the bass was phenom! Downstairs the Spectal crew of Matthew Dear and Ryan Elliot had us so slowed way down but thick as theives. We are jamming at the festival now prodigy Kyle Hall was smoothe and deep just like his Detroit proginators and now UK maven Martyn is criss crossin from dubstep to techno to acid cuts nothing short of brilliant!

#DEMF Get it started

So we have arrived! After riding the 125 Smart bus from the airport we did some Greek food at the Golden Fleece. While we were there some jax insiders told us Agoria was playing for free @ Pulse. So we hustled on over and not only was Agoria on fire but it was a whose who of the techno illuminati. Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Carl Craig, Stacy Pullen, Kyle Hall and other Detroit techno stars were out having a good time listening to the techie goodness of Agoria and just enjoying a beautiful Detroit night. What an amazing start to this techno filled weekend we call Demf.

Detroit afterhours

Well folks our yearly visit to the Motor City is right around the corner and it is hard to contain myself. I wanted to take a moment to give the low down on some after hours madness. That we know and love. First is a double punch to the gut with the Spectral X : YEL3 opening party. Our old friend Speedy J will throw down a 5 hours set, while Spectral faves Matthew Dear, Ryan Elliot and Seth Troxler play nice threesome, but a live appearance by Ghostly newbies Birds & Souls is bound bring chills. Of course if you are jonesin to see Omar S you’ll have one night only at Berreta’s This is home. Ben Klock and Marcel Dettmann will bring some Berlin flavor to the Centre Street Social,  of course we cant talk about Berlin with mentioning Ellen Allien and Stimming rockin the Smart Bar night at the Majestic. Of course for those who know Metroplex turns 25 and is a line up of Detroit proportions, Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson all under one roof. And of course the after party to end all after parties Need I Say More returns once again to the old Miami and we are of course looking forward to our Ghetto Blaster brew at 7am. There is so much going on so I will let you do a little diggin check out Resident Advisor for a complete listing and for some local knowledge Detriot Luv has all the ins and outs for this years festival after madness. As for me Ego Killer TV will have camera in tow and updates here all weekend long!

More then words.

Booka Shade
More!
Get Physical [GE]
CD/MP3
Release Date: 05 04 10
Booka Shade are back today with their fourth album, 'More!'. It's an 11 track, 45 minute ride along the boundaries of house and techno but with a real attention to craftsmanship. I don't count myself as a big Booka Shade fan but what impressed the shit out of me was that every track seemed better than the last. I started on the ground floor and ended up in the penthouse.
I was not initially taken by opener 'Havanna Sex Dwarf' (it was a little too deliberate) and some of the earlier passages in this album were a bit dry. However, I later realized their importance in the overall scope of 'More!'. The music gets more fluid by the cut so 'Teenage Spaceman' falls into the great wide open of 'Divine' with Yello frontman Dieter Meier. 'Scaramanga' recalls The Field in the best possible way while staying original and every track is now one bomb after the other. New single 'Bad Love' is club ready as is and the crescendo is the sonic juiciness of 'This Is Not The Time'.
Booka Shade will be playing the Movement Electronic Music Festival in Detroit May 31st which is at the end of a six-date US tour which covering the hipster mecca that is Williamsburg and a few west coast cities. Take a minute to check this release because the 'Shade's really hitting their stride on this one.

8/10 - Justin Shurman

Jahcoozi
Barefoot Wanderer
BPitch Control [GE]
CD
Release Date: 04 19 10
Genre defying would be too distinguished a term to bestow here but the trio that make up Jahcoozi executes dub, trip-hop, grime and pop almost effortlessly. Thankfully, this album doesn't have that annoying high-gloss finish that lesser records fall victim to but it will no doubt draw comparisons to that other band of the same ilk that rhymes with Mortishead. I like to think it plays closer to Mo' Wax-era Andrea Parker. Save for radio friendly unit shifter 'Powerdown Blackout' and the hopeful cover of The Cure's 'Close To Me', the inaccessible, brooding tone of this release encourages multiple listens. Intricate cobwebs of sound are discovered in every corner. 6/10

Various Artists
Boogybytes Vol. 5 - Seth Troxler
BPitch Control [GE]
CD
Release Date 02 22 10
On the flip we have hype king du jour Seth Troxler droppin' the latest volume of this fun, off-the-cuff series. First though, if another white guy in stovepipe jeans name checks Troxler (or Wolf + Lamb for that matter) I may scream. Until then, let me offer this unbiased review. I enjoyed the dialogue on the opening track, both sides dripping attitude. It set a familiar vibe: the vibe of a thousand cocksure DJs.
Seth rolls through some sinister examples like Baeka's 'Right At It', one of the best cuts here. The off-balance piano strikes and lumbering timpani samples conjure up images of being trapped in a big old abandoned house during the day while sunlight shines through threadbare curtains, highlighting the free-floating dust particles amongst the shadows. That may sound twisted but so does this mix. You tell me 'Right At It' doesn't have hardwood floors, brother!
The rest of the CD tries to keep that incessant groove and while I didn't care for the middle-third (yes, Alexi Delano has an off day sometimes), the last five cuts here really bring it home. Birds And Souls' self-titled track sounds like some Psychedelic Furs dub while Roman Flugel and Kiki turn in excellent numbers. Whether you choose to buy into the Troxler as globetrotting, playboy tastemaker and image-monger is a personal decision but I like to think he's best selecting some next-level shit and this disc has it's moments. 7/10 - Justin Shurman

#WMC ULTRA\ORBITAL

@ Ultra
Luciano @ UltraOrbital @ UltraIbiza Tent @ Ultra
Josh WInk @ UltraFaithless Sound System @ UltraAfrobeta @ Ultra
@ UltraOrbital @ UltraBloody Beetroots and Steve Aokli @ Ultra

This year was a stellar one for Ultra. I can remember years back as youngin, travelling down to the first one, not realizing what the hubbub about WMC really was. Years later Ultra still manages to rock the house. This year the spirit of techno and house were alive and well to a sold out crowd of over 100,000. Even the scalpers where having a hard time getting a ticket.  There truly was cornucopia of electronic sounds as we roamed the massive Bicentennial park. Some early rain on Friday was a little worrisome but that didn’t stop the likes of Josh Wink as he proceeded to decimate masses with a tip back to his Higher State of Consciousness days. We also got a special treat at the Carl Cox tent as Cadenza label head Luciano treated us to his Latin infused deep techno and house rhythms steeped in r&b samples and the like. Saturday was a real banger with reunion of Faithless Sound System with MC MaxiJazz and Sister Bliss. They had a great live show with their hit Insomnia and a few new tracks. I really was wishing to hear  God is a dj, but I assume that had something to do with the absence of Rollo. The new kids on the scene Steve Aoki and the Bloody Beetroots had the Bayfront stage in full riot status as there hardcore meets rave styles slammed into the scene. We also got a great taste of Miami locals Afrobeta whose mix of Latin flavor, 80s synth pop sensibilities and acid bass lines made for an unexpected crowd pleaser.

After seeing Underworld and Prodigy rock out Ultra years past I had often wished that Orbital would be invited to play. Of course when I heard they disbanded my heart sunk and the fact that I might not relive what is the moment of an Orbital live show held heavy in my mind. When I heard they were back together I put my hands together and prayed that they would make it to Florida. So when my prayers were answered, not only could I believe that the brothers Hartnoll were here, but that there new live show was absolutely phenomenal. A trip down memory lane, there new show focused on the classics from the Green and Brown album, but with slamming new versions. Fully armed to teeth with synthesizers Paul and Phil sported there trademark flashlight specs as they crafted remarkable reworks of Chime, Rewind and Halcyon. There visuals gave party goers a good dose of reality of the world we live in and prove that not only is Orbital still comfortable on the dance floor but also in our minds as well. My only regret was that there set was only an hour and far too short a time to spend with a good friend.
Ego Killer TV ran into Orbital backstage before the show and recorded a short interview about there live show and some upcoming studio work:

#WMC Radio, Roses and Reviews

Jesse Rose vs Radio Slave

One of the highlights of WMC was the first night at The White Room. Radio Slave and Jessie Rose played all night and were billed as Rekids vs. Made To Play All-Stars. If you're familiar with these guys, you know how deep, dark and funky these cats get. If you don't, stop sleeping on 'em . They were switching off every thirty minutes playing house and techno, jazzy and funky, managing to be all over the place without ever abandoning the crowd who were basically wildin' out throughout.

 Rekkids vs Made to Play
Jesse Rose had the place littered with his label comp for Scion as part of their sampler series which proved to be a buffet of grit and bounce showcasing a few of the artists on Made To Play like Riva Starr, Idiotproof and Oliver$. Also scored a Radio Slave promo for Fabric 48 which I had missed. Don't know if you guys remember 'Koma Koma' a little ways back but the Steve Lawler remix (with one of the thickest beats of '09) is on this comp and sums up this show exactly: dark and wild just like the sleeve pic of a giant eyeball ogling a haunted house. Plus, we ran into Arthur Baker. Yeah, it was a good night out.

The Dutch part-time dubstepper sheds a few skins on this release and plays the spectrum of beats fantastic. This is a sometimes quiet and personal, almost lonely comp that still manages to have something for everybody like the best Fabric comps tend to do. Is it techno or house? Who cares. Martyn's cuts are varied as they are bizarre but the winners for me are Ben Klock's reworking of Harthouse rosterboys Deepgroove & Jamie Anderson's 'The Clock' and EDM chameleon Jan Driver's 'Rat Alert'. Take the red pill. 8/10 - Justin Shurman

#WMC Anjunabeats goes 'deep' in Miami + new releases

AnjunaBeats WMC 2010

anjunabeats in miami - made

Having thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at last year's Anjunabeats WMC gig, we made sure to mark our calendars for the sequel. Their sister label, Anjunadeep, has just released it's second annual collection and has realized it's own identity in the last 18 months all the while being backed by the seemingly unstoppable Above & Beyond, who are actually in talks with Richard Branson to DJ a flight to the moon. (I am both impressed and rolling my eyes.)
The venue had just changed names from Karu & Y to Ice Palace apparently on the week of the event and besides a little evidence of the transition, it looked business as usual. We came in to Martin Roth working it out in the Anjunabeats Room. Roth has reinvented himself in the last year, producing pacier tracks pitched down from his usual tempo yet keeping his signature style intact. He played out his version of BoomJinx & Andrew Beyer's 'To The Six' that also appears on the compilation. The crowd was amped for Josh Gabriel who, although had a rough start, built the rest of his set carefully and evenly and allotted copious amounts of crowd interaction.
Label head James Grant (who mixes Disc 1) opened up the Anjunadeep Room playing some cuts from the label to a four foot wide disco ball and an up-for-it group. A group that had the highest per capita incidence of Anjunabeats t-shirts in the world. We arrived shortly before the torch was passed to Jody Wisternoff who proceeded to break out new Way Out West jams, his new Anjunadeep track 'Lassoo' and tear the roof off with three brand new versions of WOW classics 'The Fall', 'Ajare' and 'The Gift' - the last of which was just released on the newly revived Deconstruction label. It was a total hands in the air affair.
Back in the main room, Andy Moor hit the decks and commanded the attention of the dancefloor which by now was packed out. We agreed that Andy Moor's trademark rolling style is much more preferable to period tracks like 'Ballerina'. Moor was bringing it and I see why he gets rated as high as he does in the DJ Mag poll. It really was an ace set. Cheers to him for coming so far in the last decade.
Tonight's 'Mystery Guest' was (you guessed it!) and when I witnessed girls at the venue crying, surprised even, that "OMG! its Above & Beyond" were the guests, I hoped to be blown away. Instead I got two-thirds of the group and a mini Best Of show. Hey, I love Oceanlab's 'Lonely Girl' as much as the next metrosexual, but it was a favorite, like, last summer. Though judging by the main room temperature at the so-called Ice Palace, maybe it WAS last summer. (And who the fuck forgot the lasers this year?)
Jaytech and BoomJinx kept it runnin' in the 'Deep Room which was the best area of the night. The former, who hails from Australia, mixes Disc Two of Anjunadeep02 and he played his solo entries, 'Ozone' and the chunky-as-hell 'In The Jungle'. It was a treat that the room loosened up a bit so we could enjoy why this guy's one of the most popular producers on the label. Along with BoomJinx and everyone who played in this room, an excellent job was done showcasing the label. Friendly bar staff and totally professional security - the Made events are always done right. Well played.

Nitrous Oxide is Polish artist Krzysztof Prętkiewicz. Since Anjunabeats does about one artist album a year I always expect a lot, and like all the others, this record's dynamic as hell. Why bother using the same cliched adjectives to describe the music when I can assure you that the most sonic shit out this Spring is right here. New single 'Far Away' is soaring and doesn't disappoint, there's some breaks action in there, three downtempo cuts and many tracks are edited to the five-minute mark which was the right choice for his style and the habits of trance selectors in 2010. Some of the strings are plucky and almost classical which was also a welcome twist - it brought me back to Nylon Moon-era dream trance. Every listen begets a new favorite. 8/10 - Justin Shurman

Ultra music festival : one for the records!

Ultra music festival returns for it’s 12th year with another insane lineup in the heart of downtown Miami at Bicentennial Park. This years roster has a lot of something for everyone. If big trance is your bag then Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren and Above and Beyond will be sure to keep the hands in the air. If your more the indie-electro-hipster type then Little Boots, Bloody Beetroots, Calvin Harris and Steve Aoki will have those skinny jeans working overtime. House heads will enjoy all ends of the stick with Kaskade, Carl Cox, and Felix Da Housecat. For us techno minded folks the likes of Josh Wink, Green Velvet and our favorite Luciano will bring down the house. If that was not enough Faithless Sound system legends will be there making there first splash into the Miami bay. However the pièce de résistance, the one I have hoped would play Ultra for years, is the return of Orbital. Making there first appearance in the US our favorite brothers in rhythm are bound to level the festival with a show that has astounded festival goers world wide. As always this is just a taste of what Ultra has to offer so check out the full lineup because this is going to be one for the record books. ultramusicfestival.com
