In the running for least cohesive lineup of 2012 is Diplo, Sleigh Bells and Liturgy at Freebird Live on February 9th. I guess Sleigh Bells can be the only common denominator between the DJ aesthetic and black metal from the Thrill Jockey label. How Liturgy ended up here and not at a one-off with some local sludge-metal gods at Jackrabbits, I don't know but you know what? Knock yourselves out. Tickets can be purchased here.

TRACK OF THE WEEK! If the DJs at TSI aren't playing this on Saturday, it'll prove the biggest parties don't always play the best new music (the Britney remixes don't help either). 'Toulouse' has a drop that you will NOT see coming around the corner which is surely why its propelled to #2 on the Beatport Top 100 (a feat I don't judge tracks by but will mention when one of my favorite labels accomplishes it). Do yourself a favor and check this right now. 9/10

New silver marbled-vinyl 10" from Music Man, Belgium's last longstanding, heavyweight techno label from two heavy hitters in progressive. 'Geist' takes the vibe from Depeche Mode's 'Some Great Reward' over to Bedrock Records and the title track's music box melody is worth the price of admission alone. These come hot off the heels of Petar Dundov's last two singles, which are already classic. Juno's got the 10", while the MP3 on Amazon throws you a third track to round out the package. 8/10

You may remember this Tiesto track. Now it's received "that Dutch house update" from these guys, who, despite the negative purist comments on YouTube (yes, there are Tiesto purists), turned in a remarkably well-done version. Great tuff-house build. And certainly not OVERdone. Sprinkle this one in your set, guaranteed to bring a smile. 7/10

Miniminds come over to the Harthouse stable for a spell and throw down this dark-as-a-mofo techno 2-piece that occupies the "one driving techno track" slot needed for any good techno set. A space recently vacated by Sasha Carassi's "3:44", lead cut 'Submerge' is a dark, industrial burner and 'Serpentine' is a shuffling, almost tech-house number. Does the bizness. 8/10

Gotta mention this burnin' hot house track from Spinnin' Deep that's really unique. It starts right off with a subtle, winding aural melody and a sawtooth synth behind it that builds and builds into this swirling mass of bravado, grace and a shitload of fog machine smoke. Truly one of the classiest DJs in progressive house, he's done no less that eight Global Underground compilations and has recorded as one half of club hit-machine Way Out West for almost 20 years, a fact that sometimes gets criminally overlooked. Lately, Nick's done a well-received single for John Digweed's Bedrock imprint ('In Search Of Silver') and another ('Buenos Aires') for Hope Recordings, a long-running house label he A&Rs. The Terry Lee Brown Junior remix of 'Buenos Aires' is featured on his Balance 018 compilation which we reviewed here earlier this year. The album cover borrowed to pimp this week's show is one from a string of Roger Dean works used for Yes covers from 1971-1981. Yesterdays was a compilation album to tide fans over between studio albums. It came out in '74.

Epic monolith

Bostonian Andrew Bayer's been doing a few singles for the Anjuna crew here and there and a few months back dropped a monster of a debut album I would be remiss if I didn't push on somebody. The first two opening cuts are a surprise: beautiful metallic operatic glitch-hop. They fade into one of my favorite jams this year, 'Counting The Points', the true ground zero for this album. It has a long panoramic intro that works into a big-time warped synth-line kinda like Boards of Canada at Love Parade. This synth line returns once the 4/4 beat comes in and really hits a grand slam. Perfect opener to get things started quickly. The next four tracks are each different flavors but one prog-trance bomb after the other. The closer is a downtempo thing that leads you out of this record gracefully. Bayer has a sound that is slightly different from the rest. Could it be the fact he's American, I don't know. The Anjuna boys seem to always do right with their artist albums, releasing them sparsely and keeping the quality high. Well worth the money. 8/10

Just spent an amazing 2 days in New York City. No festival, no conference just 2 nights of dancing and days filled with record shopping. Halloween night we lucked out and got go to Deep Space at Cielo. Francois K's housey monday night got even crazier with the fantastic bass sounds of Pearson Sound. The bass sounded incredible on a proper sound system. Night two we thought was going to be more low key but a free shindig but Juan Maclean, James Murphy and Pat Mahoney (LCD Soundsystem) at the Vans Warehouse made for happy times. While the sound was little lacking James and Pat made up for it and really killed it really eclectic upbeat set. Record shopping wise we scored at Bleeker Street records. With some quarter house records. The real gems where at A-1 Records but there was too much, I could go back again and again and still never come home empty handed. Greats times in the NYC it was also my 8 year anniversary with my fellow Ego Killer cohort Eowyn :) who shares my love of beats and record digging so who could ask for anything more! -Dr. Strangelove

I've been getting back in to the first wave of trance and one of the king kong labels of that time was Sven Vath's Harthouse imprint. They were known for the dark, 303-laced trance of the time, with streaks of techno, house, breaks and downtempo. Some of the greatest names recorded for Harthouse from 1992-1997 like Hardfloor, Alter Ego and Oliver Lieb (under several guises). Harthouse has now been back longer than its original tenure and the BPMs are slower but still with that same top quality so I thought I'd throw down a Top 5 Past and Present from the top udda dome.

Days of Rave and Roses: Video Review

With the whole netflix phenomena we definitely have access to more videos then ever so I am going to try and start checking electronic documentaries out and doing my best Siskel and Ebert for you folks. First up is Rise: The Story Of Rave Outlaw Disco Donnie. This is really a snapshot in time of the rave scene of the late nineties early 2000s. Not so much a full blown biography about Disco Donnie, as it really is more a well crafted slice of rave scene from that time period. Produced in 2003 the soundtrack mixed by Josh Wink really stands the test of time and really brings you back to the pounding walls of bass that one could find at the Freebase Society parties. Some reviewers find flaws in story telling but if you ever partied in back in the day you would really get a kick out of this. Unfortunately netflix does not have the bonus footage which talks about the R.A.V.E. act (which ravaged the scene across the south east) and Donnie's prosecution under the federal crack house law. But you can find it for $10 on amazon and it is a fun peak back in time of the southeast rave scene. Follow the jump for more on Disco Donnie.

Sweatin' to the oldies?

So I was out joggin today and had Robert Hood's Xlr8r mix in and man did it have my feet moving, Mr. Hood has not slowed down and neither has his techno. Check it for some slammin' tracks via his discog and some newer tunes. There’s another mix I’ve been enamored with over thelast few weeks while makin' turns on the bike or sweatin’ over the bridge. Juan Atkin's LWE mixis packed with slamming goodness. The mixing is by no means pristine but the bounceis there and that’s what makes a crowd move, there is also a really good interviewfrom the father of techno. It really reminds me of the first time I saw him, mylegs could not stop dancing.

Field Report

I sure was excited to hear about this. The Field's got a new one coming out and since Pitchfork blew their load all over it in advance I thought, maybe it'll really their best one yet. The title looked promising. Listening to the samples though, I doubt it. And I tried hard. Forget about those runnin' 12 minute jams of the past. Other bands and labels have that slow, rock-oriented, piss-take-but-not-trying-to-be-a-piss-take music on lock. I expect more than 2 tracks to be danceable. 100 bpm is not danceable, Johnny K. Hole. I'll probably check those sound samples again since I definitely consider myself a fan but I can see why Alex Willner is the darling of rock critics who can tolerate a cup of electronic music every now and then. Also, in an effort to bum you out even further, The Field's tour isn't coming anywhere near the Southeast so we'll just save the real estate on this blog and not post the dates.

Yep, his sophomore artist album is out now. Probably the most forward thinking DJ in big room club music these days, Sander's CD is an abbreviated journey of the year 2011. You can get the unmixed, extended versions as a Beatport exclusive (minus Track 12, which you should have already downloaded for free off Facebook by now and if you haven't, it's on the CD). The only true anthem of Summer 2011, 'Koko' is on here, along with current DMC #1 'Drink To Get Drunk' and Dusk Till Doorn-favorite 'Love Is Darkness'. There's also your du jour cameos courtesy of "that chick who sang on IIO's 'Rapture'" and the Pete Best of Swedish House Mafia, Laidback Luke, among others. While the guests are OK by me, I'm not really too excited to see another big name jock do an album with a smattering of cameos. Plus, I was a little disappointed with how 2008's 'Supernaturalistic' played out on CD and this seems to repeat that. To sit out all those 3 minute edits. I'll snap up a download and wait for BestBuy to bring this puppy in for $10 on Ultra. - Justin Shurman

I made a 110 minute mixtape and then realized hardly anyone does tapes these days, SOOOO…I ripped Side A onto a CD and here ya have it: part one of my 1969-2009 45 Toss Up Mix. It’s from my fantasy series Jaxlore Radio Show. Again, I did 20 discs so find me if you’d like one. Sometimes you just gotta go underground. And that what was happening Thursday night at The Garage. In St. Augustine, a little spot off of US1, people ready to dance to house, got down and boogied. Whether or not it was intentional, the name Garage brings us old schoolers back to the legendary Paradise Garage where genius Larry Levan took the word DJ to another level and set the stage for early days of house. For those that never got a chance to be a part of something so special, it is nice to see some of that vibe represented in North Florida. By the way did I mention this was in a garage too? It was a great night and we enjoyed KC and the rest of the crew pumping the four four. A speaker cut out early on but they did there best to overcome, of course it didn't stop the crowd from getting there dance on. Ok so lets see, lots of interesting news coming down the pipe. It appears Bjork has a bit of a delay on her new biophilia album. The apps that are coming out are amazing and the video directed by Michael Gondry is true to Bjork fashion, looking forward to the whole shebang.

In other news my boy The Juan Maclean has a new EP coming out digital on DFA check out the scoop and stream at pitchfork. It was about time I headed up to TSI to check out this night which I heard gets pretty live. I met Sam of the Bangarang crew who showed me the ropes and though I don’t know the significance of the namesake, it involves LED hula-hoops, glowsticks and fire and that’s just fine by me. The crowd was up for a party! The music was like if you took every Deadmau5 remix, any track that’s bitten off Afrojack in the last 18 months and any Top 40 remix, put ‘em on shuffle and VOILA!: I dub thee DJ Chowderhead. It looks like they have the under-21 demograph sewn up and they’re converting some new blood. To EDM, I’m not sure. For a hedonistic night, yes. Sometimesa good album can really capture a moment. You can listen over and over againand really get pulled in so deep by every song that you feel the artist madethis album just for you. ADA's Meine zarten Pfoten (My Tender Paws) does just that.This emotional ride down ADA's river of house flows seamlessly from beginningto end. Likely takes us through arollercoaster of feelings but it's so beautiful that you don't care and justlet it wash over you. At the gateseemed a little out of place at first glance, but once it picks up yourecognize the ADA that is not only a melodic seamstress but a force ondancefloor as well. While her Jazz singerinterpretation gets to show off her penchant for pop R&B, its Happy Birthday that knocks my socks offand has me spinning round the room. I am really starting to dig Pampa records, DJKoze and Markus Finks outing, if they keep putting quality releases like thisthey've got a convert. Give it a listen here.

Erasure plays House Of Blues on Friday September 2nd. They just finished up their Pop! tour (on the heels of releasing the Total Pop! – The First 40 Hits comp) and come back to our side of the pond to kick off the tour for their new upcoming album, Tomorrow’s World, released October 4th in the US. Lead single, ‘When I Start To (Break It All Down)’ (which comes out September 26th as a CD and MP3) can be heard on the band’s site. You can purchase tickets here, but with the service charge, they’re $47.75 a piece. However, this price could imply that Erasure ain’t comin’ back. Catch them while you can, they still get rave reviews.

You know when you pay to see someone and it wasn’t as good as you hoped and you don’t want to sound like the Grumpy Old Raver but you have to speak? This is that time. We expected a great show like the Sander Kleinenberg gig a couple months ago. What we got were three uncohesive and disjointed sets with some technical difficulties thrown in. Acosta was especially uninspired, and I won’t waste time picking it apart but it was not there. Nor was the half and half in my drink, instead being replaced by some International fucking Coffee sweet vanilla fake-ass creamer. Did we not all see The Big Lebowski? A $10.50 Grey Goose white Russian deserves half and half.

I also take exception to moving the artists from the semicircle glass-paneled booth to the stage. The table didn’t seem high enough and the whole table/tarp combo didn’t show as well as playing where the soundman sat. Do whatever you have to do but get the talent back in that booth. It will create a better vibe and look more cosmopolitan anyway. My two cents.

The best part really was when a sax player came up and busted it freestyle for a bit. He could smell the drum fills coming and played accordingly. The sad part came when he played a few bars ‘a capella’ and the beat never came back in to rescue him. I was like, “drop a beat, drop a beat!”

Finally, the guys with the video cameras have to go. I get letting in ONE photographer to take some shots, maybe letting someone shoot a little footage, using common courtesy. Maybe. But not these cats shoving camcorders in my face. Take a page from the old playbook: if you weren’t there, you weren’t meant to see it.

Three things that jumped out at me when I saw this flyer: the praying hands pose, use of the ‘Do You Dream?’-style font and a new album title (‘Visions Behind Expressions’) similar to Schulz alias Dakota’s ‘Thoughts Become Things’. If you haven’t heard yet (I heard via Rough Trades twitter) that the warehouse of PIAS UK distribution burnt down during the London riots, the only info I have found is the statement below, I hope all the indie music lovers out there can chip in and help out during this huge loss.

“I have no doubt that if you’re here you’ll have heard the news that the PIAS distribution centre in Enfield has been burnt down during the London riots. What you may not be aware of is that the warehouse contained the physical stock for most of Britain’s Indie records labels. The subsequent loss of income and cash flow problems that this act of mindless vandalism will bring about may well be enough to push many of the smaller operators out of business.

Our aim is to try and rally the music industry, both on the artist and the audience sides, and see if we can raise some money to see those affected through the tough times ahead.

There is always one mix comp that owns my summer and by golly gosh, this year’s winner is the fine 2xCD pictured above. SvD blows me away with his focus on placement. He’s also ballsy, dropping sections in quickly and combining tracks I use but would never put together. He plays a spectrum of styles starting off with the Dutch house sound du jour, dropping bombs one after the other and ending up in that familiar territory at the bottom of Disc 2: the trance firestorm. Simply the best of Europe! 9/10

‘Up’ is the deepest album I have heard all year so far. Whether you know System 7 or not let me tell you they add yet another layer of complexity to their whole project with this album. This is a very solid effort and a testament to over 20 years as an outfit. Some of the best tech-house, progressive and trance is right here. These two are consummate professionals who get better with age. You may remember them from the 90s but they’ve been keeping it real the whole time, album after album, just like Hardfloor. If you’ve been sleeping, check this record with guest shots from A Guy Called Gerald and you will not be disappointed. 8/10

Yes, this is another new thinking man’s tech-house long player from Plastic City. This is slightly on the Latin side of things (think TR-727 instead of TR-707) and is continuously mixed. B&K’s big singles ‘Time’ and ‘Fate’ are featured alongside a slew of unreleased cuts. This is somewhere between the first thing you play Saturday morning after you just got paid and you’re about to ball and early evening on a breezy Sunday night on the beach. As always, Plastic City proves again why they’re the number one name in tech-house. 8/10

Cinemark (along with AMC and Regal) decided to pull out of showing The Electric Daisy Carnival Experience. So no theaters ended up showing it in Jax. I have to imagine Kevin Kerslake is a little pissed off at Kaskade for being the catalyst that killed any chance this film had of reaching the rest of America. The theater chains’ actions are no better. Well played, everyone.

The Electric Daisy Carnival Experience, a new documentary on the famous long-running rave and directed by one-time Nirvana collaborator Kevin Kerslake, was set to play at four theaters in town this Thursday night at 9. However, due to the riots at the premiere in LA, AMC and Regal have pulled out from future screenings leaving Cinemark Tinseltown on Southside Blvd. as the only place to catch this film. Today sees the release of the newest Balance comp, this time featuring the talents of Spaniard Henry Saiz. My experience with Saiz is limited to his remix work for Bedrock but with this release, frankly, I could not be more pleased. This album is a real treat. It is more like an artist album from Saiz than a straight-up mix CD as it features only unreleased tracks and collabs between Henry and other artists.

There is no denying that Henry is a versatile producer. He effortlessly skips from his Boards Of Canada-styled intro (swore I heard a clip of Be-Zet’s ‘Maya And Aliens’ in there) to the pulsating slower house style that is becoming more predominant (think <115 BPM) and gradually stemming out into more club-friendly territory. The diversity here is the best part. It captures the spirit of some of the best spread-out Balance comps (SOS, Chris Fortier) and packs it into 2 discs. Very impressive. My subjective observations are going to prove worthless other than me saying it is warm and cozy while at the same time being very complex. Really, it is the best Balance comp I’ve heard in some time. Take a moment and check this one out. 8/10

Right, so I’m a big DM fan and was eagerly anticipating the June 7th release date of this remix comp. There is a 1-disc version and a 3-disc version and of course I was aiming to score that 3-disc. I was already planning a trip to Worst Buy, this being one of the few records I could actually buy there and I had visited DM’s website the weekend prior just to fawn over the tracklisting again and get all jazzed up for the new remixes.

So release day goes by, I’m trying to make a living. It’s now Friday night, I’m ready to start the weekend with a new album and so I make another visit to the DM website. There’s a press release dated June 7th. Apparently a select few record stores in the US got free promo 12”s of ‘Personal Jesus 2011’ with some rare b-sides to give away with the comp. The same 12” that is going for $30-$95 on eBay. FUUUUUUCK! Must. Have. Twelve inch. Being nighttime, the stores on the press release list were closed. At the stroke of 10am Saturday morning however, I was on the horn.

Miami: sold out Wednesday. Orlando: sold out day of release. Atlanta: same story. Just about everybody in the southeast US had given them out and the ones that had ‘em either didn’t do mail order or ran out of comps and had to reorder and weren’t SURE whether they did mail order. Some interactions were less than inspired for sure. On the list, though, I noticed a store in the Panhandle, near Panama City: Central Square Records. Called them up, they too had the 12” but had to re-order the 3xCD.

Fast forward to Wednesday, when the order was placed. It came in the next day and it was mailed out with the promo 12” on Friday. I just got it. Success! I can’t wait to get into it and see what these remixes are all about…

Bedrock Digital has been on fire since their inception and this release follows that trend. Omid 16B (who needs no introduction) brings two progressive watercolors to the table with this two-tracker. ‘Rain’ has a dark, starchy analogue synth loop running throughout while ‘Passion Of Zorro (Club Mix)’ is a tinkling tech-house bubbler that has the best of the Plastic City style in it. These track titles should be reversed methinks. Either way, it’s pair of aces. 8/10

This is Solarstone’s first post-‘Touchstone’ output and lead-off single for the sequel to the IDMA-nominated ‘Electronic Architecture’ compilation. The main mix has a fragmented vocal sample a la Andy Moor circa 2005 and, I swear, the synth sounds close to the one in the Leama & Moor remix of Tiesto’s ‘A Tear In The Open’. This is not to diss the track, however, ‘Big Wheel’ is not really a standout track. It would function better as an album track at this length. Shortened to six minutes (like many of the big tracks these days) and remixed to pack more punch would have served this track better. I was hoping for these qualities upon listening to the Solarstone Presents Smashing Atoms Remix, but it was just another bland reworking of the same length. This’ll work clubwise but doesn’t have that Solarstone magic. The respective dubs don’t help either. 5/10

Today sees the release of the slightly retooled version of SK’s album from late last year. The tracklisting has been shuffled to put more of the poppier elements up front. The first half of this album, aside from the fierce and moody breaks of ‘Closer’, is shallow. Sander works better as a selector and less as a verse-chorus-verse songwriter.
Kraak & Smaak along with Ursula Rucker turn in a decent ‘The Journey’ and Jon Fugler (who fronted the EDM heavyweights Fluke and sung lead on SK’s ‘Venus And Mars’) turn in a strong one in ‘Disko Riot’. The track that separates these two, M.A.N.I.A.C. is a driver, too. It’s the hat-trick of these three, which come later on in the album, that makes the best part. The other entries fall by the wayside as mediocre party jams. 5/10

Paul is reviving the Perfecto Fluoro label, his old trance offshoot of Perfecto Records. I was hoping for an old-school ‘96 Eastern-style time in the vein of the old incarnation and that is exactly what I got. Say what you will about Paul, this is one balls-out stormer. There are changes throughout and it’s pretty fresh. It could have functioned as a one track single though. The remix paled in comparison so much I didn’t even download it. And you know I’m a completest. 7/10

We had a blast at the Sander Kleinenberg show last night. The venue was just right for the occasion. I thought I might be headed to Pretention City but it was decent and everybody was well behaved. There were plenty of staff and with three bars, it was easy to get served. Very professional and accommodating. When we showed up, Larry Banks was cookin’ it up something good, almost in Radio Slave territory and the place was packed.

Sander took the decks clad in a classic Happy Mondays ‘Hallelujah Rave On’ t-shirt that would not have looked out of place in my dresser. Stoked!! Starting off, it seems he felt he had to bring it back down a notch into the funkier realm of house (which we expected) and build it from there. Once I started to hear that staccato Dutch house however, I knew we were going places.

Sander dropped in some old skool influence, which for me, made the night. No shit, you say? Well, I’m a sucker for The KLF, but Serge Devant’s new cover of ‘3 A.M. Eternal’ was crucial. I even saw the guy from the Safe Touch Security commercials and when that track dropped, he had a “30 second or less response time” to the floor. And how could I miss the Chicago hip-house classic ‘Yo Yo Get Funky’ by Fast Eddie? No Shazam necessary! Yeah, it was bangin’.

I saw a dude with a ‘5K’ shirt on who I assume was part of the crew. That dude shoulda been manning a merch table with a stack of those shirts and some new CDs. We’re so close to the release date of the album, they should have had some for sale. Many EDM artists do not take advantage of the merch side and I’ll never know why. Easy money.

I can’t wait for the next party and I hope Suite brings some more big room club DJs going forward. Think Amsterdam and not Miami. They can definitely handle it and our club scene will cultivate a more international vibe.

Ok folks, we here at Jaxlore HQ are getting ready to throw down at Suite tonight for Sander Kleinenberg, along with Larry Banks and Alberto Diaz. Sander was kind enough to answer a few questions about himself and the new record so first we wanna share that brief e-mail exchange with him (and fuck me, I wish I could’ve talked to him more about new beat):

Sander, what was your first bona fide EDM record purchase and how old were you?

I bought a compilation called ‘This Is The Sound of New Beat’ back in 1988. You could say that was the first together with "Love Can’t Turn Around" by Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk.

Did that record change your life? If not, what dance record(s) DID change your life (or at least shift your consciousness)?

It completely changed my life. The sound was inspiring and fresh and a birth of a movement followed. However I was 14, so the summer of love didn’t fully sink in with me until sometime later in the early 90s.

Your new album has surprised the old fans of the whole '4 Seasons' era. What do you attribute your change in production tastes over the years to?

It’s a question of personal growth, I guess. Just raising the bar every time I go into the studio, journey really, always looking for the perfect beat.

Will we ever see a singles retrospective?

I would hope so in 10 years from now…haha.

What do you think of the fast-paced release schedule of record labels in this digital age? Are labels releasing more crap just to keep up and isn't it a shame some good new tracks don't have the staying power of 10 years ago?

It has definitely become harder to be on top of everything that goes on nowadays, but it sure as hell is very exciting to discover the gems through all of the rubbish. The art of selecting, which is truly what DJing is all about, has become even more important and the former ways of shifting through the good and the bad are gone.

I noticed the obvious influence of Wired's “To The Beat Of The Drum” in your track “This Is Our Night.” Are you inspired by the old school NYC house sound?

Absolutely. I think the influence of U.S. street culture from the 1980s is probably the biggest cultural influence that has happened to me in my life and with that the sounds of that era.

Do you have any fond memories of your time spent in Florida you'd like to share with our audience?

Florida is the first state to have fully embraced my sounds my guess is because of its Spanish roots. I have more than fond memories and love for it than I can express in one sentence.

Finally, what kind of music could I expect to hear if we took a road trip in your car?

Expect the unexpected.

Dutch producer Sander Kleinenberg officially steps into the artist seat with ‘5K’, his debut studio album out June 14, 2011 on his own label This Is Recordings (via INgrooves). In support of his collection of elegantly entrancing electro that slides from energetic dance floor beats into airy sonic dreamscapes, he’ll return to North America this June for a string of live dates.

Co-produced with Josh Gabriel and mixed by Kleinenberg and Steve "Dub" Jones [Chemical Brothers, UNKLE, Audio Bullys], ‘5K’ is quite the ride. With its opening track, ‘This Is Our Night’ rolling into ‘Chemically’ featuring Ryan Starr, Kleinenberg's propulsive production morphs into an anthemic refrain that's bound to get bodies moving. Another song built for the clubs is his "attempt at being French," the 80’s-inspired vocodered ‘R.Y.A.N.L. (Rock You All Night Long)’. Then, Kleinenberg takes the listener to outer space on the warm rapture of "Closer" where Neil Ormandy's vocals reach beyond the sky. British jazz singer-songwriter Jamie Cullum, who guests on the bass-y and bouncy first single ‘Remember When’, adds a soulful swagger to the track which sees SK expanding even further and embracing a new vibe. There are also collaborations with fellow Dutchmen Kraak & Smaak on ‘The Journey’ featuring Ursula Rucker. The dance floor explodes again with ‘M.A.N.I.A.C.’, which was built especially for the clubs Sander came up in, and then into ‘Disko Riot’ featuring Jon Fugler, which is, in Sander's own words, "…a techno protest song written strongly to stand up against what the world of money has done to us all–how bankers obsessed with wealth have fucked us all over… and still do." ‘This Love’ draws from De La Soul, Jungle Brothers, and A Tribe Called Quest with Ace Reign firing off incendiary verse. All of these textures, sounds, and swells converge on a gorgeous collaboration with Miss Montreal titled ‘Wish I Said’ - and the song says it all. ‘5K’ is the next level for electronic music.

Sander Kleinenberg established himself as an electronic music contender worldwide in 2000 with the release of the classic progressive house track, ‘My Lexicon’. The song spread like wildfire becoming a club standard and announcing the producer's formal arrival on the scene. Becoming highly in-demand from every facet of the music biz, Kleinenberg took on a myriad of projects and solidified his status as a tastemaker. In 2001, he began releasing compilations annually and he formed his very own label, Little Mountain Recordings. Given his talents behind the decks, he also remixed tracks from the likes of Justin Timberlake, N.E.R.D., Annie Lennox, The Eurythmics, Sasha, Janet Jackson, and more. His latest remixes includes vibrant versions of Katy Perry’s ‘Last Friday Night’, Daft Punk's ‘Tron Legacy’, Dev's ‘Bass Down Low’, and Inner Party System's ‘Not Getting Any Better’.

All the while, he began DVJing - his own patented show pairing live DJing with visuals and music. His shows became legendary as he took the scene by storm with festival and club appearances everywhere, including most recently the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival. Day 2 & 3: Movement Festival 2011

After and amazing day one, it was hard to believe that things would get better and better. Saturday night we were transported to Berlin for the evening via CLR party as COLLABS(Chris Leibing and Speedy J) turned an old 1920’s bank called the Elysium Lounge in to throbbing mass of techno converts.

A crazy late night couldn’t keep us from checking out Ghostly’s Com Truise first thing on the Red Bull stage, as he reminded us why the synth sounds of the 80s are spo near and dear to our heart. Traversable Worm Hole gave old school techno head Adam X a fresh face and sound. Margaret Dygas prepped the ensuing masses for Ricardo Villalobos as his wavy gravy Chilean-German minimal house icon finally made it to Detroit. While his set was great there a few sound snafus that we less then ideal for such a hyped set, but the crowd didn’t mind with swaggered hands in air. While Al Ester kept the soul in the house outside in the Made in Detroit tent, Ben Klock was relentless at the Torino Stage Underground, it was the perfect spot to have your mind turned to jelly. We caught the last few songs from Loco Dice and he was nothing short of spectacular as the deeper sound of Germany made it to the Beatport Stage. I didn’t know what to expect from Carl Craig’s 69 (six nine) project. I have maybe one 12 inch from this master of techno ceremonies and was interested to see what direction he would go in. Well no one was disappointed, he was belting out techno tunes funky, acidic and otherwise and had the amphitheater in a ruckus dressed in his white mask and long tail jacket.

After the festival we made a bee line to go hear Kyle Hall, Space Dimension Controller and Jay Daniel at Motor City Wine and got down in this very small venue with about 60 other dance maniacs getting down to the soulful, space sounds the encapsulated a new generation some from, some influenced by Detroit. While I would love to tell you we pulled and all nighter, I had to take a disco nap before hitting up the Old Miami for the yearly Memorial Day Need I Say More event. When we got there about 9am things were in full swing and we were treated to a live set by Footprintz. Following that Benoit & Sergio started grooving through house old and new, melancholy with soul, and had a few hundred sun burned headz dancing in the grass.

After a few taxi rides and some huffing it we made to the festival, there was talk of tornados and even a few scary gust through the festival but we lucked out as we dance rain free for the most part. Pearson Sound\Ramadman and Scuba, later on show folks how deep dubstep could be and that your don't need the wobble to jack the crowd! We just missed Florida via NYC fave Three and listened to Art Department through the spin on the tech\micro house scene. We wanted to make it out and around a little bit, but with a good view we got to dance our arses off the our old friend Green Velvet. Born for a performance of this magnitude hearing Answering Machine in all its glory on the main stage was all I needed to pretend there would be no trip back to reality. Fat Boy Slim came on in his theatrical style would the masses with tracks old and new from the big beat days of dance. We tried to hit up Flying Lotus but it was packed like sardines and the vibe was through the roof. I didn’t want it to end. The last three days of dancing, record shopping, meeting the wonderful people of Detroit and others from all around the world, really made for another special year. Paxahau has done it again from the future to the past this year was nothing short of an electronic dance music journey.

Day 1: Movement Festival 2011

Staying only a few blocks from the festival this year made for quick access to the gate, the sun was shining and it was time to dance. In words I can't express how good Spacetime Continuum sounded, but I'll try. It aways amazes me how the quality of electronic dance music coming out of the mid to late 90s was and for Jonah Sharp (SPT) there's no exception, his stuff was mind blowing and full of soul. As if things could get any better Daedulus at the Red Bull stage was pure insanity his cut up LA beat sounds from deep in the belly of the beast had hands high along with other things! After the madness we sat down to some Slow's BBQ. Being a veg type person there veggie chicken slider was a treat. We hung for a bit waiting for the rain to die down listening to the live house stylings of Tortured Soul. As the rain came down deep tech house master Kerri Chandler came on and the masses danced like it was a warm summer day, nothing could stop Detroit from getting there dance on. When the rain died down we hit up yeah Ghostly store and got meet the 80s synth revivalist Com Truise. We got some drum and bass flavors first from the wild spastic beats of Venetian Snares and the on to the heavy weight Goldie. I wasn't quite sure what to expect from Monolake Surround down in the underground stage but it was really amazing hearing drums, synths and all sorts of sound bouncing back and forth in 360. Felix da housecat held court at the mainstage with his proper electro flavor while Visionquest brought a more pounding experimental techno soul flavor to the detroit stage. Neither rain nor cold could stop the festival. Hopefully today the weather will warm up and we can catch Villalobos, Loco Dice, Ben Klock, Space Dimension Controller, Soulclap and have another journey into dance! In Detroit: Movement Festival 2011

Its has started. Jaxlore has touched down in Detroit. I always like to get in a day early and enjoy the local flavor and it was definitely the right decision last night. We kicked off the night at Pulse where Malik Alston and Craig Huckaby threw down some insane house, it was hard to leave but the allure of Paul Woolford was strong. At Motor City Wine we saw the new bottles of Carl Craig's 20 Anniversary of Planet E bubbly but it didn't go on sale until Friday night. I've always wanted to know what Planet E tastes like. It took a bit to get the sound sorted but when Paul Woolford took the decks people appeared from outta nowhere and he got the tech heads groovin on this side of the pond. It's a bit chilly in the D but the weather should warm up in time for the festival. Today it's time for some vinyl shopping and getting out to see the sites. Well we are getting ready for another trip to the Motor City. The Movement: Detroit's Electronic Music Festival festival is upon is in a few days and being that we could not make it to Miami for this year WMC madness we need a fix. This years line up is jammed packed with electronic dance's lumunaries, visionaries and more. And for those of us that are far from a major metroplitan area this weekend will be packed with trying to fit a year of clubbing into 3 days. Here is my list of must sees this festival:

Visionquest - Part of Detroit's new school Seth Troxler, Ryan Crosson, Shaun Reeves and Lee Curtis are a force to reckon and these men from outer space are going to make you groove.
Kerri Chandler - House Legend and purveyor of soul!
Daedelus -Throwing chinese stars on the LA beat scene, he's bound get people bouncing.
DJ Harvey - Another house favorite bound to have hands up.
69 (Carl Craig) - One of Detriot's finest performing under his 69 guise, prepair for this future music technician look back to and forward through time.
Sven Vath - Purveyor of fine German techno since it is early stages this Cocoon king will show you why he has kept us dancing all these years.
Loco Dice - If you missed his perfomance with Luciano a few years ago, I am sorry. Dont miss this one.
Com Truise - Ghostly's Jersy boy on the lofi scene, has crafted a sound that is reminscent of 80s movie sound tracks gone green.
Green Velvet - Speaking of green dont miss his live stylings, you never know whats gonna go down during a Green Velvet set.
Flying Lotus - Working the world stage with his LA beat dept, this Brainfeeder head and Warp staple will raise roof guarenteed.
Ricardo Villalobos - This years secret guest lets hope he makes it into US ok because after missing him last year we are ready.
Space Dimension Controller - This youngin from Belfast will come armed to the teeth from the future for a live set not to be missed.
Space Time Continuum - A blast from the past apparently Johah Sharp got caught in a time loop and is back to bliss and beats for a new generation.
Scuba \ Ramadanman - Ok I am putting this two guys together because they are the measure of everything that is right with dubstep. Make sure you are there when the bass drops.
